Things to See

Big Bend National Park

Just a short 45 minute drive from the Gage Hotel, we hope you make time to visit this beautiful National Park while you're out here! Known as "Texas' Gift to the Nation" this park is where the Rio Grande has carved canyons to make its exciting landscape that is home to diverse bird and cactus species. Some of our favorite hikes are:
-Santa Elena Canyon Trail
-Lost Mine Trail
-The Window Trail

Big Bend Ranch State Park

This remote park features rugged mountains, steep canyons, amazing views, unparalleled night skies, and solitude in a high desert setting. The park stretches along the Rio Grande in far west Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border. Visitors can hike, mountain-bike, backpack, paddle, ride horses or explore by vehicle . The park has been designated an International Dark Sky Park; learn more about stargazing here. This is Texas’ biggest state park, so there’s a lot to explore!

Marfa, TX

An hour from the Gage is Marfa, a small desert city in west Texas, now known as an arts hub. Check out one of the many art galleries or installations, including the famous Prada Marfa. Then grab dinner or drinks at Hotel Paisano or Hotel Saint George. Outside of town is a viewing platform where the mysterious orbs known as the “Marfa Lights” phenomenon can sometimes be seen.

Terlingua, TX

On the opposite side of Big Bend National Park from the Gage Hotel, about 12 miles from the Rio Grande and the Mexican border, lies the little town of Terlingua. It was founded as a quicksilver mining town in the 1880s, but the mines (and town) were abandoned by 1942—rendering it a bonafide ghost town. Stay at Willow House and enjoy the quick drive and easy access to Big Bend National Park or Lajitas Golf Resort We also recommend kayaking on Rio Grande with Far Flung Outdoor Center!

Fort Davis, TX

Nestled in the Davis Mountains, about an hour from the Gage Hotel is Fort Davis. Home to the McDonald Observatory and soon to be Clancy Cabin, this cute town is worth a visit! Be sure to check out the nearby Davis Mountains State Park.
